Abstract

Methods: The subjects were 76 mothers of children with cerebral palsy under 15 years who attended the rehabilitation department of hospital and local welfare center in Busan. The data were collected through a self-reporting questionnaire from August to September, 2005. The data was analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program using mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression.

Results: The results were as follows. The mean score ?standard deviation of depression, self efficacy, health status and family function were 21.75?7.06, 61.70?8.67, 2.80?0.64, 67.02?13.01 respectively. The depression had a significant negative correlation with self efficacy (p<0.01), health status (p<0.01), family function (p<0.01). The main factors related with depression in mothers of children with cerebral palsy were self efficacy and health status, which explained 24.4% of the depression.

Conclusions: When we try to develop the nursing intervention strategy for the mothers of children with cerebral palsy, we must consider to evaluate the depression, self efficacy, health status and family function. Especially, we need to develop the nursing intervention to relieve mothers depression and promote self efficacy for caring the children with cerebral palsy.
